Senate again votes to cut off funds for Vietnam war

The Senate approved a antiwar amendment to a $206 billion military procurement bill by 49 to 47 to halt all U S military funds for Southeast Asia within four months after enactment, provided Hanoi frees American prisoners of war. The move follows a July 24 vote on a similar measure and faces conference committee where it is expected to die.

Hippies Help Fight Big Sur Forest Fire

A wind driven blaze in Big Sur, California scorched about 3,360 acres as firefighters and hippie volunteers joined the effort. About 2,000 people were evacuated while 1,400 firefighters battled the fire with trucks, bulldozers, a water carrier, retardant planes, and helicopters. Authorities warned of traffic delays on State Route 1 as crews fought the stubborn blaze near remote canyons and gullies.

Bremer's diary reveals plan to kill Nixon or Wallace

UPI reports Arthur H. Bremer's diary described plans to assassinate either President Nixon or Alabama Governor Wallace. The defense read 75 diary pages in court as a telephoned threat interrupted the session.

Court rejects Austin busing plan as not far enough

In New Orleans the 5th U S Circuit Court of Appeals voided the Austin desegregation plan for not including whites in busing and failing to relieve black and Mexican American segregation. It urged a new plan to be used when classes resume, noting the Justice Department positions conflicted with prior cases.

Clergymen Unfrocked Over Conduct in England

Two married clergy members face removal from duties in northern and southern England. The Bishop of Liverpool bans Rev Gordon Sissons, 37, from Holy Trinity Church Formby for impropriety with a choir girl. Portsmouth Cathedral provost Rev Porter- Goff is unfrocked for conduct unbecoming after a relationship with his secretary Dolores Estella Lloyd, 41. Lloyd’s mother says he is “absolutely crazy” about her daughter. The Rev Sissons disappeared with Susan Fourdrinier, 18, from the choir. Susan’s family expresses shock as she returns home after the affair.
