Canada honors Lester Pearson with building and college
The country names a new Lester B Pearson Building for External Affairs in Ottawa and plans Pearson College of the Pacific, a worldwide education project aimed at fostering world cooperation. Queen Elizabeth II will open the building with Prime Minister Trudeau present. Pearson’s widow Maryon chairs the fundraising for the college, seeking about 3 million dollars. Pearson, 75 at death, shaped Canada’s peacekeeping role and won a Nobel Prize for diplomacy.

Inmates Wreck Prison Faster Than It Can Be Repaired
Warden Park Anderson said inmates at Oklahoma State Prison are causing more damage than repairs can keep up with and 1,700 convicts will be evacuated. The State Board of Corrections ordered removal of 1,300 prisoners and urged Gov. Hall to reconsider parole for 400 inmates to allow repairs after a 43 hour rebellion that caused about 20 million dollars in damage. National Guardsmen were used to quell inmates demanding steak as meals. In a second item, Sister Elizabeth M. Edmunds of Shamokin Pa will become the first nun commissioned as a Navy officer, attending UPenn Medical School with Navy support and serving as a lieutenant in family practice.
