Vermonters Clean Up Roads In Third Annual Drive
Vermonters joined the third Green Up Day with about 60,000 volunteers, collecting roadside litter across the state. Gov. Green and Lt. Gov. Arges met volunteers and rode with a bicycle club from Burlington to Montpelier. other events included judging a poster contest and site stops at Brattleboro, Randolph Center, and Cavendish. Last year 60,000 participants collected 7,000 truckloads or 6,000 cubic yards, with cans 45 percent, bottles 15 percent, and other materials 2 percent. crushed bottles will be used in a Burlington area glass phase highway project.

Probe starts on death of man shot by police
A grand jury will probe the death of Bristol youth Richard LaPlante shot Friday at Newport police headquarters after allegedly aiming a rifle at a Newport officer. Police Sgt Hardy fired in self defense as LaPlante entered the station with a rifle. LaPlante had a prior insanity finding in 1971 and was reported to be on medication. he was from Charlestown Vermont and employed at a Norwich plywood firm.

Human Services Secretary William Cowles said the state seeks about 500000 less than last year for federal support, with a 1.1 million request pending in Washington.
