De Gaulle’s Defeat Reflects France’s Election Backlash
The defeat stemmed from a bill few voters understood, yielding a clear out or non vote against De Gaulle. Rural discontent, franc depreciation, and unilateral foreign moves fueled the hostile outcome, drawing European reaction that, while sympathetic, was not surprised. De Gaulle, last of WWI statesmen with Roosevelt Churchill and Stalin, quit French politics in 1946.
