Smith dies at 66 while visiting St. Albans club

Curtis R. Smith longtime St. Albans Chamber of Commerce official and son of former Vermont governors died of a heart attack at a men’s club. He was 66 and survived by his widow.

Albany Mayor orders rent control survey and public hearing

Albany mayor Corning launched a survey with housing groups to decide if rent controls should be re established at the April 1 1962 level. A public hearing will follow after letters seek input amid reports of gouging and tight housing from the South Mall project.

Berkshire public bids policy tightens maintenance work rules

In North Adams municipal building Inspector John Gattuso announced a new policy requiring formal bids for under $31,000 maintenance jobs in public buildings. Jobs will be posted in City Hall and Gattuso will no longer personally solicit three or more firms to bid. Sears to relocate main offices and expand catalog sales at 107 Main St with 200 parking spaces and daily service. Woolworth may close North Adams branch after Christmas, with urban renewal plans delaying long term decisions. GE names Sprague Electric as Vendor of the Month for rapid capacitor deliveries aiding Polaris missile components.

Pittsfield pastor Rev J McLean declines to identify members of the Berkshire Committee of 1,000 before a legislative racing probe. Insanity Plea Seeks Dismissal In Boston Case

In Suffolk Superior Court a petition requests dismissal of charges in the Boston Common garage conspiracy case. It argues defendant George L. Brady was insane during the period of the alleged conspiracy. Brady and three associates face indictments for conspiracy and theft of construction funds totaling 4500000 dollars for a 9 million underground garage project. The other three were convicted. Brady remains slated for trial.

Dartmouth Student Drowned While Canoeing on Connecticut River

Fire fighters and volunteers recovered the body of 20 year old Clifford Gurdin of Oceanside New York after a canoe accident on the Connecticut River near Dartmouth College in Hanover New Hampshire. Two fellow students Glen Kendall and Charles Blaisdell tried to rescue him but were unsuccessful. Gurdin's body was found about 50 feet from the river's east bank.
