Rural district weighs union high school to ease crowded classrooms

Committee Chairman William D. Smith outlines two options for Greater Bennington Schools as 1966-1967 enrollment grows. A union high school would cost rural taxpayers about 98 cents more annually, offset by converting Bennington High into a junior high and freeing Molly Stark classrooms. Without the union, the district faces building more rooms and higher tuition costs for out‑of‑district high school students.

East Dorset man found guilty of muskrat trap tagging violation

Robert Connors of East Dorset was found guilty by a Bennington Municipal Court jury of failing to tag a muskrat trap. Judge George M. Fifberg fined him $25 after witness George Thuren testified that two traps were attached to the same stake near the Rutland Railway right of way, one tagged and one not. The defense argued one tag sufficed since both traps shared a stake. Jury trials continue next week.

The plan raises village taxes from 7.40 to 8.04, reflecting debt service, special education, and capital outlay with credits including state aid and uncollected taxes. The union district would serve six member districts with a 926000 budget, and village share about 357000, yielding 4.41 on the Grand List to reach 8.04.
