Chamberlain backs out on Ali fight in height vs fame talk
UPI reports Lew Alcindor says Chamberlain made the right move by not fighting Ali. Ed Carmel, the circus giant, weighs in at 9 feet tall, backing Chamberlain and claiming he would have fought for a million dollars. Carmel predicts a smash hit if the bout happened, but notes money was too low for Chamberlain.

Nicklaus and Barber Lead After Tough Round at T of C
Jack Nicklaus and Miller Barber fired three under par 69 to share the first round lead at the MONY Tournament of Champions in Rancho La Costa. Narrow fairways and rough eight to twelve inches high punished wayward drives as only eight of 35 finished under par. Barber and Nicklaus each posted 34-35 with six and five birdies respectively, while the rough lot affected others. Beard, Kadecke, and Player were one stroke back at 70.
