Woodford zoning hits a roadblock

Woodford faces a stall in approving a proposed zoning ordinance as Great Northern objects to a five acre minimum lot size for 1100 acres of forest land near Woodford Lake. The Massachusetts firm seeks cluster homes with half acre lots and continues talks with town officials, planning leaders, and regional adviser John Simson. The dispute centers on density versus tax base, delaying the May 11 referendum and prompting additional hearings before a final decision.

Coca Cola may drop Manchester Depot site for Route 7 clash

Coca Cola Bottling of Northampton may abandon plans for a distribution plant at Route 1130 and Dufresne Pond Road in Manchester Depot after a Wednesday hearing before the District Environmental Commission. Attorney John T. Carmody Jr. said the company remains interested in Manchester sites but is discouraged by highway department objections to the plan, which would place the plant in the path of a new Route 7 interchange. Local officials condemned the highway department and questioned assurances about Route 7 progress, while Coca Cola and Carmody consider alternate sites in Manchester and reflect on zoning delays impacting their timetable. Local selectmen pledged to pursue better communication with state highway officials amid broader push to extend industrial zoning and attract business.
