Shared time plan approves for Bennington parochial students

The grades 7–8 board approves a shared time program allowing seventh and eighth grade students from Sacred Heart and St Francis de Sales to attend courses in the public school system next year if no extra equipment is required.

Shaftsbury Fire Burns Four Acres

More than 100 firefighters from three companies contained a grass and brush blaze on Helicon Farm near U S 7, preventing spread to dense woods. The fire started near the road edge, fanned by wind, and required traffic control by state troopers and mutual aid from Bennington Rural Fire Department. An ambulance and local volunteers aided, with crews noting hand tools and pumps held the line.

Wait and See Advised On Reapportionment

Eugene V. Clark advised the Mt. Anthony Union School District board to await legislative or judicial rulings on reapportionment before acting. The board will proceed with the Bennington Religious Education Foundation release-time program, while Clark seeks enabling legislation. ACLU concerns were noted about course scheduling and religious education impact. A committee was formed to monitor BREF scheduling and report back.

Third F111A Missing Possibly in Thailand

A third U S Air Force F111A swing wing jet reportedly crashed on a mission near Thailand Monday night with unknown causes. Spokesmen said the loss may have occurred en route to or from a bombing strike as crews conducted four missions against North Vietnam.

Snipers Smash School Windows at Mt Anthony High

Mt Anthony High School suffered more than $1,100 in window damage over the weekend after unknown snipers fired on the building. Assistant Principal Paul A Fairfield said two windows in the machine shop and a classroom were broken before Monday morning. Police are investigating.

Gun Control Laws Favored By 71 Percent

New York The Louis Harris poll reported 71 percent of Americans favor federal laws to tighten gun sales, with 23 percent opposed. Gun owners favored such laws 65 to 31, and 51 percent of homes reported owning guns. Rural areas showed 78 percent gun ownership. Since last August household owners willing to shoot in a riot rose from 29 to 51 percent.
