Earth Day events span nation with protests and cleanups

Lake Ozark students spent 3% hours along U.S. 54 and left five garbage piles, each 90 feet around and 10-14 feet high, illustrating waste. Missouri officials warned cleanup would take more than a day. Groups coast to coast planned pickets, symposia, and marches to mark Earth Day with provocative campaigns and festivals.

TV Covers Earth Day Events With Wide Network Coverage

Hollywood reports Earth Day programs across NBC CBS and local stations. NBC will air a two hour daytime special with live, filmed and taped segments. The Today show dedicates all environment broadcasts this week, including The Social View of the Environment Problem with guest C C Johnson. CBS will offer Earth Day A Question of Survival in prime time discussing health care and services.

Earth Day events planned across Bennington area

Bennington residents gear up for Earth Day with a full day of ecology talks and workshops at Bennington College led by the ecology action group. Rep. Harvey D. Carter is the only public official named for the 9 a.m. panel, followed by open sessions on pollution, transportation, land use, and social change. Evening talks at Mt Anthony Union High School feature former Gov Philip Hoff and John Burgess on seventies priorities.

Carswell Resigns to Seek Senate Nomination

Judge G Harrold Carswell announced from Miami his resignation from the U S 5th Circuit to run for the U S Senate. He echoed a Nixon conservative policy line and was backed by Governor Claude Kirk. The move reshapes the Florida race to fill the Holland seat as Carswell seeks broad public backing.

Nixon Announces Another Pullout in Vietnam

President Nixon said the United States will withdraw 150000 more troops from Vietnam in the next year, reducing total U.S. forces there to about 284000 by May 1971. He framed the move as progress toward a just peace and warned of strong measures if Communist activity increases. The plan follows prior withdrawals bringing current levels to 343000 from 549000. Enforcement of Vermont environmental laws faces many hurdles

Mt Anthony MAUHS to elect board at large

Mt Anthony Union High School Board will re elect all directors to comply with a Supreme Court ruling. The plan, advised by attorney Eugene V Clark, moves to at large elections by the entire district rather than by district. A special meeting is set for June 18 to elect the full board for three year and unexpired terms.

Reaction to Speech Generally Favorable

Washington D C UPI Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield praised President Nixon's plan to pull 150000 more troops from Vietnam as pleasing and surprising amid pressure toward smaller cuts. Mansfield noted various pressures in Indochina could have yielded less action while others, like Hatfield, praised focus on Paris peace talks and a political solution. Republican leaders Scott Ford and Brooke joined in calling the move a step toward Vietnamization and potential better Hanoi terms.
