Home Gardens Produce Delicious Potatoes
Gardeners are advised to grow potatoes at home as an easy, flavorful crop. Plant sprouted seed potatoes in small hills with 2 to 3 inches of soil, mound to prevent greening, and harvest early or late varieties for baking quality. Use proper spacing, fertilizer, and a spray for blight and beetles, choosing Katahdin or Kennebec for home use. Cobblers planted May 1 yield early tubers, with August maturity for main crops. Potatoes adapt to sand or clay, but do not rely on home gardens to cut costs versus commercial production.

Conservation Conversation Landowners Seek Help In Constructing Ponds
Soil Conservationist notes E W Meyer of Southern Vermont Orchards has helped construct six ponds with aid from the Soil Conservation Service and built three to four more independently. A four acre pond among apple trees on Mt Anthony slopes offers scenic value while supplying spraying water for harvests. Meyer plans two new ponds near Carpenter Hill, one quarter to half acre, dependent on springs. Requests for pond help now total 23 landowners. A ride through Southern Vermont Orchards in bloom illustrates the appeal and utility of ponds.
