Natick Tests Two New Viet Nam Armor Types
Natick Laboratories announced two new body armor designs for Viet Nam front line testing within about three months. One vest stops 30 caliber bullets, the other shields against grenade fragments. Developed under Edward W. Barron’s crash program, the olive drab five pound nylon felt vest costs 40 dollars and aims to improve wearability in hot, sweaty conditions. A lighter ceramic fiberglass composite, 16 pounds, to be used by patrols and jeep crews, has stopped 50 caliber rounds and 30 caliber bullets in tests at Natick and related arsenals. Barron notes the effort draws on World War I to Korean war research and involves multiple facilities including Watertown Arsenal and Pickerington Arsenal.
