Sunspots and Auroras Tied to Great Plains Droughts
1930s to 1950s and 1970s droughts on the American High Plains are linked by Dr. Charles G. Abbot and Dr. Walter O. Roberts to solar activity. Roberts argues high sunspot counts reduce jetstream strength and rainfall variability, while droughts align with low solar activity and 20 to 22 year cycles. The High Plains droughts are said to correspond with the appearance or absence of the Aurora Borealis, though data remains inconclusive.
