Bennington Selectmen Urge Vote To Consolidate

The Bennington selectmen press for town village unification arguing it is easier to amend after adoption. The measure, approved at March Town Meeting by 200 votes, faces a revote on April 29 with zoning on the ballot. The statement says a unified town could amend its arrangements without reworking the act through the legislature. The three selectmen contend it is wiser to secure consolidation now.

New Burr & Burton headmaster named from Amesbury

Neal E. McLaughlin, 37, educator from Amesbury Massachusetts, named head master at Burr and Burton Seminary. Appointment approved by trustees after a 35-applicant review, to begin July 1 1970. McLaughlin holds AB from University of New and master's from Salem State College with 15 years in education including four as headmaster of Amesbury High School. Peter Houskeeper remains interim headmaster until July 1.

SALISBURY Vermont Sen I O'Brien leads Gov Deane C Davis in a statewide projection 53 to 47 per St Michael's College professor Vincent Naramore for WVMT says in the Republican primary Davis edges Lt Gov Thomas Hayes 61 to 39 while U S senate incumbent Winston Prouty leads former Gov Philip Hoff 54 to 46 though Naramore notes Salisbury support for Prouty is wavering and Hoff is making a comeback he adds Salisbury has mirrored state results for 40 years.

Bennington Program aims to aid dropouts at Mt Anthony

After 18 months planning the Mt Anthony Union High School board is asked to fund a Bennington Program for dropouts. The plan combines industry investment, student stipends, and community partners to provide education, work, and social development aimed at reducing delinquency and illiteracy while fostering local responsibility and eventual overachievers. Funding includes $45,000 federal, $10,000 state, and $20,180 from the district, plus industry investments and a $520 end-of-year payout to each participant.
