A wind torn smoke plume marked a March morning blaze that nearly destroyed a three family building on Church Street opposite the Methodist Church in South Pownal. The Pettibone family fled with neighbors while the Messina household lost most possessions. The Pauls, new tenants, suffered remaining items but escaped. Fire alarm sounded at 5 a.m. with mutual aid called about 8:15.

Amendments Added to Tax Reform Bill in Vermont Senate
The Vermont Senate finance committee approved four to two on a 4 2 vote five amendments to the tax reform bill sending it toward a Senate floor debate this week and following House passage two weeks earlier. Amendments include exempting the first 2000 of capital gains for retired persons and real estate tax breaks for seniors, plus a 10 student tax credit and a 4.5 cap on capital gains for high income brackets. The bill would set the state income tax at 25 percent of federal liability, raise personal exemptions to 600 dollars and shift the burden to higher earners, with full implementation slated for January 1 next year.
