Mt Anthony Union School District sets May 7 for a $1.65 million bond election with state aid to fund a new high school for six member districts. The prior March 12 referendum failed by 192 votes of 4500 ballots. Polls shift from 11 a.m.–7 p.m. to 12 noon–8 p.m. for the May vote.
The union board endorses a 100000 square foot two to three story building on a 50 acre Mt Anthony site to serve Bennington Graded Greater Bennington Woodford Pownal Shaftsbury and North Bennington districts. It would start with 900 students and could expand to 1200. Pending Montpelier legislation may increase state aid while defeat of the bond does not solve area educational problems.
President Kennedy pressed for restraint on steel price hikes hoping to avert a new industry dispute. United States Steel and Wheeling Steel weighed price moves while analysts warned of wage pressures if selective increases loosen controls. The stock market reacted with steel shares hitting 1963 highs as officials weighed broader inflation risks.
The Senate authorized buying $15 billion in military hardware after its first secret session in 20 years. Guards guarded doors for over four hours as senators weighed adding $196 million to accelerate the Nike Zeus antimissile system, a vote that failed 58 to 16.

Governor Hoff granted a 60 day parole to Frank Brown of Brattleboro who was convicted of arson causing death and sentenced to life. The governor asked the Parole Board to reexamine the case and provide a full report on Brown's health and activities.
Vermont bill sponsored by Rep. Laine C. Vance would impose a 30 cent state tax on each admission ticket sold at the Green Mountain Park race track in Pownal. Track spokesmen were not available for comment.
In Clarksdale Mississippi a flaming Molotov cocktail was hurled into a home where Rep Charles Diggs was staying. No injuries were reported. Diggs is in Mississippi on a fact finding mission into racial problems.
Mohammed Khemisti, Algeria's foreign minister, lay near death as surgeons said removing a bullet lodged near his brain would hinge on his condition. The minister has been in a coma in an oxygen tent since a young Muslim fired at him Thursday in front of the National Assembly.
