Arafat halts southern Lebanon offensives amid Syria pressure
Yasser Arafat ordered a stop to guerrilla advances in southern Lebanon as Syria urged Lebanese rightists to pause fighting along the Israeli border. They reported no ground gains in 24 hours while shelling continued in Khiam Marjayoun and Klein. At least 12 killed, over 24 wounded weekend fighting. Syria pressed rightist leaders including Camille Chamoun, Pierre Gemayel to defuse the conflict. Israel backs the rightists seeking a security belt along the border.

Family Violence in Vermont 1971 76 Abuse Cases Highlight Fatalities
A Thanksgiving 1971 beating of a 2 year old boy caused his death from a ruptured pancreas. A local man faces second degree murder charges for that crime. Other cases include a husband beating his wife leading to hospitalization and a father pleading guilty to simple assault after striking his son. Domestic violence remains underreported and poorly recorded, with police handling 269 domestic complaints in Bennington last year. National figures show up to a million annual child abuse reports, with 200,000 abused and 800,000 neglected. Vermont recorded 800 child abuse reports involving 1,300 children in 1976. Coast Guard Seizes Soviet Trawler Taras Shevchenko at Boston Harbor
UPI reports the Coast Guard seized the 275-foot Taras Shevchenko and confiscated fish from the Soviet refrigerator ship Antanas Snechkus amid 200-mile zone enforcement. Ninety three crew members waved from deck as Rep. Gerry Studds praised the action. Authorities will inspect cargo and documents to decide on civil or criminal charges.
