UPI reports Vermont Senator Winston L. Prouty will not seek the gubernatorial nomination himself and backs University of Vermont administrator Lyman Rowell, 61, for the Republican nod. Rowell accepts the endorsement but stresses he will consider Prouty’s request seriously. Hoff, the Democratic governor, has not announced reelection plans.
Striking grape pickers near the end of a 300 mile protest march say the Schenley Industries settlement with NFWA marks a turning point in farm worker unionization. Di Giorgio and others may follow as Gov Brown plans a Sacramento meeting with demonstrators.

Local Shaftsbury report finds an 1888 town order for payment to George E Buck for a year as sister. The document dated March 5 1888 was among old papers found by a carpenter during home renovations. Three sisters who faced assessment troubles last year were paid a total of 4117 dollars.
A heated Bennington district hearing examined why longtime nurse Frances Gibney was not rehired in the merged district. The joint board cited no detailed grounds to protect others, while critics argued the process harmed staff morale and public trust. Kinney and Gibney were both qualified. Kinney was chosen for the single post.
Governor Rockefeller received a proposal from Brooklyn assemblyman Bertram Podell urging consolidation of Albany Schenectady and Rensselaer County police forces to save money. In Berlin the United States blocks Soviet salvage of a crashed jet in the British sector. American soldiers guard seven crossing points along the American zone to enforce a ban on salvage. Russians are allowed to observe salvage from West Berlin. The incident tensions Easter weekend amid protests over Soviet air maneuvers.
