President Ford in Milwaukee on a two day Wisconsin campaign swing called Ronald Reagan's attacks on defense policy fabrication and invention and questioned his understanding. Ford praised ambassador Dean Brown's Lebanon ceasefire efforts and declined to pledge a Taft Hartley act move to end the Teamsters strike, saying negotiations should run their course. He dismissed Reagan's televised address as a misleading rerun and defended his own defense record as impeccable while ruling out a debate.
Georgi Arbatov, head of the Institute of the USA and Canada, says prospects for easing East West tensions and arms deals look good, criticizing U S critics like Reagan Wallace and Goldwater. He urges avoiding concessions to extreme right wing voices and hopes for deeper Soviet American cooperation.
Vermont Gov. Thomas Salmon's Council of Economic Advisors study poverty, labor shortages, and income disparities in a rural state reliant on tourism and dairy.
