Last U S POW Freed in Operation Homecoming Return
The final U S prisoner of war released by the Communists arrived at Travis Air Force Base California with a crowd of about five hundred thousand. Air Force Capt Frank Lewis of Boston the last ex POW off the C-130 jet was welcomed by his wife Wynne and daughter Kelly. Lt Col Louis Bernasconi spoke for the released men praising President Nixon and the United States. The last known POW Army Capt Robert T White of Newport News VA was handed over to U S authorities. The total released included 564 service members 24 civilians two Thales ten Filipinos two Canadians and two West Germans.
