The 69th annual Benalla Show will run over two days starting next Friday. Entries close Monday 16th with final shows including sheep dog demonstrations and a grand livestock parade at 2.30 pm. Exhibits judged Thursday with a show dance in the Drill Hall and orchestra by Ron Booth.
Benalla Borough Council held another late night meeting finishing near midnight. Five letters were on the agenda with fifteen late correspondences admitted and debated for almost two hours. Mayor Dr. F. B. Harrison urged a formal closing time for inbound mail to curb ongoing chaos and extra-long sittings.
Entry was gained at the side door by removing iron and forcing the lock. A soldier was detained and charged with stealing from the Canada Drill Hall in July last. bail was set and he will appear in court on the 26th inst. Police are probing Sunday’s theft.
The Benalla Ambulance Committee will meet tonight to discuss the resignation of driver P. Clancy and to elect office bearers. Benalla Borough and Shire Councils will attend, led by Dr A W Grubb who has been with the service since its inception. He noted the group had not met for 14 years.
St James A tennis team defeated Devenish B on the road while St James B lost to Devenish A at home. An A and BA selection committee for the St James Tennis Club has been named including P Hollam G Kelly F Quinn J Clark and Miss K Kelly.
Benalla Borough Council discussed applying to the Government to stage a concert for the people at six o clock. Dr. L Spitzer supported the motion noting other towns have had success with similar concerts.
Mr. J. Moon of the West End Store escaped unharmed when his van overturned two miles from Benalla after a tyre blowout while returning from Melbourne. The vehicle was extensively damaged.
Record prices were obtained for several Bridge Street properties offered at auction on Friday. Two shops occupied by Ron Banfield and the Tarax Bar frontage sold with bids to £19,500 before passing in and later selling privately for £14,000. Keavey’s Garage frontage also passed in at £11,000 and was sold privately to Motor Spares Pty. Ltd. Agents were Herber Ledger Wann Co Benalla and Yeo Crosthwaite Co Melbourne.
The Tatong Football Club held its wind-up ball on Friday September 29 with a large crowd marking a happy season end. Music by Johnnie Quinton’s Orchestra and a district ladies supper followed. Awards were given by Mr. A Brock for Best and Fairest to J Carter and J Bykes, Most Consistent B Coleman, Most Improved First Year Player H Gardiner, and Most Popular Player F Brown.
Head teacher Mr R W Hallett thanks all who helped run the Benalla West School Library Committee event at the Drill Hall last Saturday afternoon. He notes many donors and workers enabled a successful balance sheet and lists committee members and helpers.
The Arbitration Court announced a weekly basic wage increase in Victoria for males and a 75 percent rise for females. The decision was reserved pending the start date of the rise, which the ACTU will need to petition for.
A recent euchre party at Thoona hosted by the Maliers Cia raised funds for the school. Prizes were won by L Windson and V Li vine. raffles saw Mrs P Whitechurch and Mr W Cordell honored. Winners included Sheila Belt and Meera BD Windsor and M O’Hare. a stall run by Mise Pm Whitechurch and Patricia Grifftha did brisk trade and a Mothers' Chip supper capped the evening. An upcoming card party is planned.
Senior Constable G H Wilson of Shepparton received a bronze Royal Humane Society medal for rescuing a truck driver from a burning vehicle in Shepparton on January 1. The award acknowledged his gallant action during the incident.
After failing to reach an agreement with the Borough Council on funding Cemetery Road repairs, Benalla Shire Councillors on Monday decide to maintain the road themselves. The Borough had refused more than one third of the cost and sent a letter to that effect. Dr F A Cook urged not to spend while Borough offers no cooperation.
Opening Boweya tennis tournament held Saturday October 7 after a postponement due to rain. Semi finals saw Mrs Pouwrson and Mrs Belcher defeat Mr James and Mr Hansen while Mr Rowan and Miss Pil beam beat Mr Pearson and Mrs Belcher 6 0. Prize money of £3 4s was won but the event was affected by the weather and low attendance.
A council report presented by town clerk PD Sutch at the Monday meeting shows the borough’s year end with a credit balance around £2000, regarded as very satisfactory.
Report to Monday borough council notes base engineer Mr OL DFPawekker discussed transfer of Crown Lands to the department for control. Surveyors awaited as plan to remove trees and hire a contractor for earthwork and finality of the sand boat project were mentioned.
Benalla Borough councillor said no letter from the Country party. the board urged a stop gap and pushed the major street sign issue at the Dunn and Carrier streets intersection to the Public Works Committee for consideration. Dr Beonison noted Benalla had luck with no crashes at two main town intersections.
Dr W Say raised concerns at Monday's Borough Council meeting about street fires along both sides of the town. The Public Works Committee will investigate with options including a horse mower or a rotary mower to protect trees.
Borough Council on Monday agreed to assist with the national recruiting drive. A committee of Cra A W Grubb W Ferguson and A Gourley will study Line campaign details. The Director General of Re CVU pledged full support.
The Benalla Urban Fire Brigade asks that future fire plug indicators be shown two feet above ground due to tall grass growth. Councillor Firth suggested removing offenders who tamper with indicators, while the committee agreed to consider the brigade's recommendations.
The secretary reports Bad W Burns is recovering and expects to be active soon. Mrs Walker senior is seriously ill in Lemnos but under good care with wishes for her speedy recovery. The Benalla branch 8.8. and A Mothers' Association held a successful meeting planning a street stall for Tuesday. Donations of all kinds are appreciated as the Women's Auxiliary schedules its October 19 meeting to plan the next month’s summer stall. The Dads' general meeting is set for Saturday October 28.
