Victoria's Second World War Memorial Taking Shape

The Shrine of Remembrance grounds in Melbourne are being developed for a new Second World War memorial design by E. Milaton. The plan creates a large open forecourt, seating for up to 100000, and a ceremonial open air cathedral for remembrance ceremonies. Sculpted figures honor Navy Army and Air Service, with a recumbent fallen warrior on the central line. A perpetual flame will burn in an open bronze brazier. Three 10 foot flags poles will mark ceremonial occasions at the eastern end. Trees around the forecourt commemorate services and Allied forces. Funding comes from government and Melbourne City Council, with £80000 needed from public sources. ex-servicemen groups are organizing support through the RSL.
