Carnival opens with 13 heats of the W A C U Half Mile Handicap and events including the Benalla Gift of 200 pounds and the Benalla Wheel Race of 100 pounds. World record attempt by Barney Ewell at 3.58 seconds for 100 yards and opening by Minister for Health C P Gartside. Dancing and catering arrangements announced with entries closing at 1.45 PM Saturday.

Obituary for Ellen Grace Bevan at 60 in Benalla region

The death occurred at Bush Nursing Hospital on Friday of Mrs. Ellen Grace Bevan wife of Thomas J. Bevan aged 60. A native of Lurg she was a daughter of the late Biman and Louise Heyer and married in Benalla forty years ago. She was admired for her many good qualities and sympathy goes to her husband and family.

Benalla Country Week Cricket Faces Wet Weather and Strong Bowling

The Benalla Country Week team faced rain at Carlton against Barham Koondrock with a tense opening stand and half centuries from Barry Talochino and Talocino. Cleary led Benalla bowling with 5 for 36 as Barham folded for 201, while Crichton claimed 2 for 40. Thieves Enter Noonan's Garage Stolen Tyres Recovered

Early Sunday morning Noonan's Garage was broken into and three tyres two typewriters and an adding machine valued at about £200 were taken. Tyres recovered in Melbourne on Sunday afternoon by police after a local resident alerted officers. A quick arrest followed when police traced a truck and van involved near the garage.

Lightning Strikes Clothes Line in Benalla Narrow Escape

Mrs Harry Sheppard of Coster Street barely escaped electrocution when lightning struck a clothes line early Monday in Benalla. The bolt sent current through a wet garment as she pulled it from the line, causing only a slight shock. Nearby, a child screamed as Barkly Street mother found the youngster clinging to an electrified fence after a storm damaged a wire between house and garage. E.M.C. was called to fix the hazard.

Over 50 Horses For Theena Sports

Arrangements completed for transporting over 650 horses from Benalla and Wangaratta to Theena Sports. Event promises the season’s finest showcase with bookmakers active. The program starts at 1 pm with horse events at 2 pm. buses run from Benalla and Wangaratta. Ken Grieves chairs horse transport, with Theenas Ladies arranging catering.

Record Entries for Annual Croquet Tournament at Benalla Club

The Benalla Croquet Club opened its annual tournament on Tuesday on its greens drawing many spectators over three days. Players from Wodonga Wangaratta Tallaganda Rutherglen Euroa and Corowa competed with Mrs S Noonan as president and Mrs W Bryce managing the event aided by a strong committee led by secretary Mrs T Howell. The club thanks donors Messrs Ww H Firth E Hiscock C Stolz H T Nicholls F McCormick J W Meadows OC Harris F Harrison A W Grubb F Phillips and Mesdames Sturken Shepley Cook Williams Briggs and Miss R Ledger for their support and the hostessing was praised for smooth arrangements and morning and afternoon tea and luncheon at the pavilion.
