Dr H Payne led a deputation urging Loombah Line water supply amid concerns of diverted water and missing domestic meters. Massed Band Display Planned in Benalla Gardens

Benalla Band aims to stage a Massed Band display in the Benalla Gardens on Sunday 12 March with use of the Gardens and rotunda granted by Borough councillors on Monday. They also expect a grandstand. A council inquiry asks for more information about the need and dimensions of blocks removed, noting a survey may be required to assess the area and any remaining space.

Molyullah Sports Set For Easter Monday Event

The Molyullah Sports will be held on Easter Monday April 10 with a meeting to finalise the programme on Wednesday April 22. The annual meeting this week approved the plan with Dr Roy Hill present and R Wilbon serving as assistant secretary.

Casey Island to be Taken Over by Borough Council

Dr W Metall a trustee of the Casey Island Syndicate told Benalla councillors that the deed of trust allows transfer to the Borough Council when vacated by the Benalla Golf Club. The area with 0 acres and about £20 in bank could involve £250 in likely expenditure. Dr Say will start arrangements before the next council meeting.

Borough approves tree removal and street stall permits

Mr J T Connolly of Mair Street was granted permission by Borough councillors on Monday to remove two gum trees at the rear of his residence if grubbed out. The 3SR Friendship Club is allowed a street stall in Bridge Street on Tuesday 14 March to aid the Popular Girl quest.

Borough Plans New Traffic By‑Law And Bicycle Provisions

The council reports consults with Benalla police on angle parking and traffic matters and proposes a new traffic by law. It recommends concrete kerbing along gutters to allow bicycle parking and asks the engineer to prepare cost estimates for six inch kerbing on both street gutters. New street lights are urged at Kathryn Street Riverview Road camp and Dunn Egmont Street corner. The report notes prior “silent cops” were installed years ago and removed, with comments from Dr Talochino and others.

Mr. E. T. Roe of 2 Gray Street asked the Borough Council to allow a house with high walls in Benalla. The council noted state housing heights and said by law would limit action. Dr. Bennison suggested possible by law changes later. They advised that nothing could be done at present.

Paltry Attitude of Shire Council Debate Over Hall Charge

Dr W L Ferguson criticized the Shire Council for a paltry stance during Monday night’s meeting on overtime rates for hall use. He cited a caretaker complaint that an extra 9/2 per hour was not paid to those seated after midnight, while the council argued the hall’s location made the charge inapplicable. The Mayor noted the issue lies outside council jurisdiction after the town clerk confirmed minute details, and the matter lapsed without further action.

Twenty Pre Cut Houses For Benalla

The Victorian Hallway Department plans to erect twenty precut houses in Benalla with occupation hoped for in November. Mayor Dr. R. Harrison said the projects shave off walls but are good jobs. Department officers met Dr. Bay and the Mayor to inspect land for erection and praised Benalla’s amenities and the town’s publicity through Dr. Say’s advertising film.

Barney Ewell headlines a Benalla Hospital Gift and Sprint with world record bid in 100 yards. England champion Albert Grant and Australia’s 1948 champ Frank Banner join Victorian winners in a packed Gift and Sprint card. Minister to Open Hospital Carnival in Benalla

Minister for Hon. C. P. Gartside M.L.O. will visit Benalla on Friday 24 February. At 3.30 p.m. he will receive a civic reception at the Shire Hall and officially open the Hospital Carnival. He will attend afternoon tea and confer with the Hospital Committee and Carnival Committee at later events.

Attempt to secure air service for Benalla district

Dr M P Cleary urged the Shire Council to renew efforts for air service to Benalla at Mondays meeting. The council agreed to seek Borough Council cooperation and to arrange through Dr Fr A Cook MLA. Cleary said the current minister showed willingness to inspect, aiming to open the aerodrome.

Benalla Shire Council Supports Soil Conservation Contest

The Benalla Shire Council donated £5 to reward the best entry in the Goulburn Catchment Region soil conservation competition. A minimum of three entries is required, following a letter from the Soil Conservation Board.
