The Board rejects the proposed high level bridge at Stock Bridge as too costly at £50,000 to £60,000 for about 700 feet. It suggests improving the existing low level crossing by elevating it two to three feet. The Board prefers the high level option only if funds are available. until then, no further expenditure. Posts will be erected to indicate safe levels.
The Shire of Benalla will observe a half holiday for the centenary train visit on April 16 following a Monday meeting. Dr P J Wiedemann brought the matter forward, and the Borough Council is likely to support the motion. The decision was carried unanimously.
Aline Mortimer of Benalla has recently received Melbourne recognition for her piano talents. The young pianist shows promise with early acclaim and plans potential future performances.
During Monday night’s Borough Council session Dr A W Grubb asked Mayor Dr F BR Harrison to provide water for councillors at meetings. He noted Shire councillors already receive it and joked he did not want anything added. The Mayor promised to arrange it.
Benalla’s cricket team wrapped Week of play last week as Keith Sherwill, a leading local player, prepared to bat. Teammates Ted Cleary and Brian Crim ming stood with Clive Cook behind them, while Brian Harrington from Bendigo, formerly of Benalla, stood nearby. Sherwill totaled 497 runs at an average of 27 and claimed 8 wickets at an average of 6.6, with many regretting his omission from the side to face the English XI at Euroa next Monday and Tuesday.

Council weighs buying two extra acres at the saleyards amid debate. Cr Cleary urged no action while Cr Hii proposed purchasing to extend space, backed by Cr Wallace. Engineer Andersom said improvements could not proceed with current funds, and the amendment carried narrowly.
R. Jones, longtime Night Officer at the local railway, is transferred to Inglewood as S.M. Llewellyn will replace him from Penshurst. Llewellyn is a footballer of note and has coached Penshurst footballers, in addition to being a former Interstate player.
The Benalla Borough Council on Monday adopted a new traffic by law to be gazetted. Dr. J Talochino formally moved the motion and it was carried. Councillors say the by law, framed after months of careful consideration, will reduce traffic and parking worries.
At the Borough Council meeting Dr A Gourley criticized delays while engineer L Db Fawekner stated the contract had already been let. Gourley warned the unit sat in sun daily. Fawekner said the contract had been let to Mr Grant and he awaited start of work.
Bruce Boyd son of D. Boyd from Barlington Boweya earns the Leslie Henderson bursary at Wanganratta Technical School. He also secured a bursary last year, continuing a record of bursary awards for the family.
