Wangaratta Athletic Carnival witnessed Lloyd La Beach fail to start in the Gift heat after a disputed start. Tom Idson won the Gift in 1d 5s a crowd criticized officials as La Beach appealed to stewards and left the track.
At Benalla Court on January 6 J. J. Bell presiding, McGann was fined 10 for carrying a bottle of wine from a local hotel during prohibited hours. The defendant said the wine was bought about 617 pm. further details unclear.
Bill Pearson of Rutherglen captains the side with a brilliant all round display at the Oval. Ted Cleary vice captain and Barry Talochino wicket keeper are from Benalla, while Keith Sherwill took five wickets and narrowly missed selection. The squad features Iain Leembruggen amid surprise selections and other regional players.
Wangaratta fire brigade won the North Eastern Urban Fire Brigades demonstration shield at Myrtleford, with Benalla second. Fifteen brigades competed in a well run event, breaking and then equalizing the eight man coupling record during the day.

Robert Hayes did not appear. he allegedly traveled 50 mph through Salisbury Street and 48 mph at Bridge and Clarke Streets. Francis Kane also failed to appear. he allegedly exceeded 45 mph at Barkly Street while en route to Mt Beauty.

A man pleaded not guilty and defended himself as his 13 year old son Graham Rodier testified about January 20. The boy said his father struck him with a knife and hit him six times. A constable reported blood on the boy and the father denied intent to harm. The case adjourned with the defendant to return for further evidence and a two year sentence mentioned.
Three district competitors Albert Roberts Phil Pettit and Les Plum Benallas joined the Champion of Champions event in Melbourne over the weekend but failed to secure prize money. Les Plum Benallas split the pigeon on Saturday while J Bryatt jnr and J Sutherland won and placed. Chas Burgess of Gaffney's Creek took third. Albert Roberts helped split the £100 Galah shoot at Wangaratta on Saturday with Jim Weston of Goorambat exiting at the 14th bird.
Price increases announced by the Victorian Dairy Consumers Association following representations. The Prices Control Branch says whole milk for consumption in country towns rises from today. In the North Eastern district retailers pay 2/3 per gallon more for delivered sales and bulk retailers pay per quart. Retail bottled milk up 1d per quart.
A CAB truck driven by L Upton caught fire near Devenish cemetery around 7 pm on Saturday. A passing motorist and the Goorambat Wire Brigade contained a grass fire before it spread. The truck burned beyond repair and was transported to Benalla by a Plums portable crane.
