Fire brigade talks on Benalla district fire alert system

A large attendance at a Benalla Rural Brigade meeting, led by President Eric Murray, discussed fire dangers on farmlands. Sergeant Williams outlined a statewide police information network and urged a central information point to coordinate brigades and equipment.

Police Notified First for Benalla Rural Brigade Fire Response

After discussion the Benalla Rural Brigade Unit will notify Police Stadion number 181 first in fires. Officers reviewed roles for district knowledge and equipment location. Funding for fire station doors was raised by debentures with a partial subsidy from the Authority, and a protest for full repayment was planned after completion.

Veteran Shooter Honored at Benalla Xmas Shoot

Ted Fell of Tungamah received a wallet engraved to mark 45 years of competitive shooting with the Benalla Gun Club during the Xmas shoot. The 75-year-old trap shooter was also made a life member as Morrie Evans, the club vice president, praised his fifty years in the sport.

Labor to Serve Local Industry Promised by Borough Council

At Monday nights meeting the Borough Council discussed providing labor for local industry and accommodation in town. A letter from Mr W J D Bostock M H R promised further effort to persuade the Minister on converting the Holding Centre to a hotel. The Mayor Dr Harrison expressed frustration at delays and a copy of the department letter was to be sent to Mr Hostowk with thanks to Ble Norman Martin.

Surprise Presentation For Popular Teacher At St Josephs

Miss K Carroll of St Josephs School was honored Friday as boys under her guidance presented a pen and a box of chocolates. Brendan Cleary and Brendan Woes spoke, wishing her a Merry Xmas and a happy holiday. Carroll thanked the students for their thoughtful gesture.

Young Man Killed on Thoona Road After Helping Mother

A 22 year old farmer and former R A A P member John Mackerel of Thoona was killed when his single seater car wrecked near Mr Hammond's farm on Thoona road after assisting his mother Mrs Mackerel. He was widely known for sporting involvement and community work. Burial set for Euroa cemetery Friday.

Fire Along Rail Disrupts Winton Area 50 Acres Burnt

A blaze along the railway north of Winton after a mid day train spread rapidly through dry grass and scrub. Five brigades responded and volunteers gathered to control the fire as it neared the Jilg way with windy conditions. Mr. H. Lees property suffered fifty acres of grass loss and a small section of fence. Repair crews from Glenrowan prepared for emergencies while the call for help arrived. An auction sale of household furniture belonging to Mrs J S Clark is scheduled for next Monday at 118 Arundel Street. Herbert Ledger Wann and Co handle the clearance.

New Year Bowls Tourney Entries Ahead at Clubhouse

Entries for the New Year Bowls tournament are now being taken at the club house. Bowlers are urged to enter early after last year’s refusals. Trophies have been selected and will be displayed in President Dick Bird’s Bridge Street shop window for the next day.
