The court suspended a labourer’s sentence after he was accused by police prosecutor Sergi Healey of stealing a £2 overcoat from the porters’ room at Benalla Railway Station on August 10. Witness Constable A A Allen testified the defendant, Gibbons, was drunken at a North Eastern Hotel garage and admitted taking the coat, seeking to understand the charge while denying memory of the act. The owner, Mervyn Robert Woods, identified the coat and confirmed it was left at the station. The defendant pleaded not guilty.
