The F S L chief rejects statements by the Legion's General Secretary Mr Kelly alleging that the Legion is worse off than the R S L. He cites a Victorian branch fund total of £12,000 to welfare projects and asserts government subsidies do not fund the League.
Thos Coish a Benalla resident for life and long time public servant announces his contest for the Warrenbayne Riding vacancy on the Benalla Shire Council following Dr M G B Meadows resignation. He is a justice of the peace and road works expert promising diligent ratepayer service.
Col McKenzie from Benalla completed a hat trick by winning the J A Sileane championship cup at Yarrawonga last weekend. He tied 155 with Frank Meadows over 36 holes and prevailed in a 5 hole playoff.
The Ensign corrects a bulldozer accident story involving Mr. E Love and a trailer at Benalla. Initial names, including driver J Gunn, are clarified he was not in charge of the closer nor present at the time. Jim Gunn is commended for eleven years without mistakes in handling dozers.

The Western District flag once used by the noted judge Shelton was flown by his son Tom Shelton of Colac at the St James coursing meeting last week. Shelton judged for the first time at St James and earned praise over three days. He accepted an invitation to return next year for the big classic alongside veteran slipper Charles Tonkein amid strong hospitality from St James. This year St James set records with attendances near 600 on the main coursing day.
A utility driven by W Knight with passengers L Knight Les Smith and his brother overturned on a bend near Whytlaw's on the Tatong road. The rear was crushed and one body injured on the off side. It was towed away next morning almost a complete wreck.
Nominations closed with two contenders for the Warrenbayne seat following Dr M G B Meadows resignation. They are Thomas Coish and Arthur Norman Alwyn Jones. Voting day is August 24 with booths at Shire Hall Benalla Goomalibee Lima South Swanpool and Warrenbayne from 8 am to 6 30 pm. Elected unopposed councillors listed for several ridings.
Raymond Thompson a 72 year old porter of 14 Goulburn Street Seymour died Wednesday evening after falling into a pit between railway lines in the yards. He did not report for duty on the Benulla Yarreworen tract and was found in the pit shortly after. Police and railway staff are investigating the extraordinary accident.
Mr J Jones elected chairman with FP Verret and Myr F Wallis as secretaries for a social committee formed to contact former players for a reunion match in September at Lae Showermaid. Proceeds go to the Penally Memorial Hospital appeal. The committee aims to gather many ex players and supporters.
A proposal at Motday to alter Benalla Anzac Day commemorations to include all denominations was discussed. Members deferred a decision to the next annual meeting, citing length of current service and the Melbourne plan as a model. The matter may be referred to the Anzac Day Committee for final guidance.
