President Carter signed an $11 billion farm bill calling it a good investment and the most far reaching farm legislation in 40 years. The measure raises incomes for grain farmers, revamps food stamps, expands research, and tightens poverty rules while aiming for farm economy stability over four years.
Senate eyes a Jackson Byrd compromise to raise wholesale gas prices from 1.46 to 2.03 per thousand cubic feet while federal controls stay in place. Filibuster opposition from Abourezk and Metzenbaum could resume if needed.
The Japanese government agreed to hand over 6 million dollars and nine prisoners to ransom 146 hostages held aboard a hijacked airliner at Dacca airport. The government asked for an extension of the hijackers deadline. Five hostages were released including two Americans, an Indian couple and their infant.
Retired Adm. Thomas H. Moorer told a House subcommittee that ratifying the canal treaty could let the Soviet Union indirectly control the waterway. He urged doubt about Omar Torrijos's leftist government and its ties to Fidel Castro's Cuba.
In Miami a 15-year-old Zamora pleads innocent citing TV induced insanity. Defense Ellis Rubin describes him as confused and alienated, while Assistant State Atty. Tom Headley portrays him as a cool killer who robbed and shot 83-year-old neighbor Elinor Haggart after a Chinese dinner.
Health official Dr. Bernard Flavhan defends the voluntary fluoride rinse in Bemidji elementary schools amid fears of cancer or poison. He notes nationwide use, endorsements, and low cost, with about 1,800 local students enrolled and 86 percent participation.
DNR says no land swap with Beltrami County is needed to enlarge Lake Bemidji State Park from 417 to 1,260 acres. The public meeting in Bemidji drew about 60 people to discuss park expansion and nearby private resort concerns. The agency argues private enterprise benefits from a larger park and outlines a plan to avoid adverse competition while linking public and private trail networks.
In Manhattan's diamond district a broker is killed and up to 1 million dollars in gems disappear. Police question Shlomo Tal a 31 year old cutter and witness who says two intruders kidnapped and killed Pinchas Jaroslawicz while Tal was forced to drive and later found with jewels under his car. Investigators probe the brutal robbery and speculate the crime could shake the famed West 47th Street trade hub.
Bemidji police report a Wednesday night theft of Lobo, a 185 pound timber wolf statue in a glass case outside Morels Trading Post on 2nd Street. Owner Lyle Wolters offered a reward and vowed to recover the landmark after two padlocks were broken. The wolf had attracted visitors for 20 years and features in local lore and a now out of print book.
