Senate panel approves 6 billion Social Security package

The Senate Finance Committee approved a 6 billion package of Social Security increases and payroll tax hikes to fund them. The plan raises benefits including 3.5 billion in cash and 2.4 billion in Medicare while boosting taxes by 6 billion.

Comities Named for Busy Promotional Season

The Retail Trade Committee of the Bemidji Area Chamber of Commerce met on Wednesday Sept. 20 to plan promotions for the coming season. Elaine Reeves Bob Irish Elmer Kannenberg Phil Riley named Halloween co chairs. Christmas plan includes two weekends of free movies Santa street decorations and a downtown tree site discussed.

Bemidji State College instructor dies in car crash

Carol Swim 32 assistant professor of women's physical education and swim coach at Bemidji State College was killed when her car crashed into the Lake Bemidji outlet bridge on Lake Avenue about 11 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene. autopsy planned. Swim, a native of Energy Illinois, had taught at BSC since 1970 and coached state championship women swimmers. She held degrees from Southern Illinois University and Arizona State University and had worked at several universities before joining BSC. She is survived by her parents and sister.

Twin City disposal plants exceed standards

Twenty three of twenty nine sewage treatment plants in the Minneapolis St Paul area exceeded state effluent standards in August. The Metropolitan Sewer Board says pollution will drop when three obsolete plants close by month end and other plants are improved over two years. Downstream water samples showed no standards exceeded. One plant to be expanded this year is at Apple Valley where discharge surpassed permissible levels by nine times.

At the Bemidji Area Chamber of Commerce board meeting on September 20, the group unveiled a bold program with a $6,000 budget rise tied to slightly higher memberships. Twenty active committees will promote and build Bemidji, with members choosing their assignments to boost involvement and momentum for years ahead. Sid Swedmark was named executive vice president.

Bricklayers strike halts Duluth area construction

In Duluth Minnesota the bricklayers strike halts most local construction as the Associated General Contractors says projects are not economical without bricklayers. Locals 3 and 16 of the Bricklayers and Tile Lifters Union have been on strike since September 5 over hourly pay. A broader state action could follow later this week.
