Bemidji Council To Create In House Engineering Dept

Bemidji city council voted 6 1 to allocate 56433 of the 1978 budget to start an in house engineering department with an engineer to be hired in February and two assistants in April The move ends the 25 year consulting arrangement with Stewart and Walker Inc The panel also approved bonds for the Highway 2 west water project and awarded the airport extension project to Stewart and Walker over other bids In other actions the council adopted a connection charge for the Paul Bunyan Mall water line and set bid notices for well field construction and final plans for the project The minority vote against creating the department was cast by Councilman Ralph Moberg The decision comes as the city weighs in house versus consulting engineering.

Bomb threat closes schools in northwestern Minnesota

About a dozen schools in northwest Minnesota were closed Tuesday morning after a call to Red Lake County Sheriff Kermit Knutson said a bomb would explode at 10 30 today at an unspecified school. The warning circulated to Polk Marshall and Norman counties and several districts listed. Authorities evacuated students at Red Lake during a fire drill Tuesday forenoon while searches found no bomb.

Washington AP reports two of three taxes in President Carter energy conservation plan risk defeat on Capitol Hill.
