In a seven candidate Democratic field Rep Edward J. Koch and Mario Cuomo won the primary with a tight margin. They advance to a runoff set for September 19.
Federal examiners widen the probe into banking practices, seeking to determine if other bankers are involved after Bert Lances private financial dealings sparked the inquiry. Comptroller John G. Heimann told the Senate committee he ordered the national investigation into banking procedures in light of the Lance allegations.
Lebanese Muslims in Hasbaya and nearby villages say Israeli border authorities warned they will be destroyed if locals do not cooperate. Officials report numerous warnings issued across the border near Mount Hermon.
