Five officers face demotion over Mary Ann firebase attack

The Army told Maj. Gen. James L. Baldwin and four other senior officers they face reprimand or demotion after the Firebase Mary Ann assault killed 33 and wounded 76. Westmoreland urged firmer action but Sec. Froehlke overruled to a reprimand. Others cited include Col. Alphus R. Clark Col. William Hathaway Lt. Col. William P. Doyle and Maj. Stanley J. Wisniewski.

IPRP Leader Honored At Cass Lake Banquet

Warrie E. Strom a Cass Lake Legal Services lawyer who helped found the Indian Parole and Rehabilitation Project at Leech Lake Reservation was honored at a Cass Lake Guild Hall banquet. He will move to Chicago after a tribute by Leech Lake officials. The event also introduced IPRP to locals and outlined staff, funding, and objectives for youth on parole or probation on the reservation.

Planning Commission acts on rezoning in Bemidji

At Bemidji Planning Commission meeting the panel recommended to the city council that South Irvine area zoning remain general industrial. The proposed re zoning of the area was discussed but not changed.

Beltrami County proposes interim shoreland ordinance

In a regular meeting the Beltrami County Planning Advisory Commission approved an interim shoreland management ordinance to go to the County Board of Commissioners for final approval. If adopted December 7 it would be in effect for one year while a permanent ordinance is prepared. The commission plans local hearings next spring and the state deadline for interim adoption was July 1, 1972. The discussion included possible rezoning from general industrial to residential with a grandfather clause for existing businesses, and Century Motor Freight proposed re zoning land east of Bemidji on Hwy 2 to full commercial for a new depot.

Cass Welfare Board Hears Policy Protests In Cass Lake

About 50 welfare recipients and citizens pressed Cass County Welfare Board in Cass Lake over policies. National Welfare Rights Organization coordinator William Kelly led the protest meeting, which urged expanding power for Welfare Director John Fjelstul and faster action on food stamps foster care and medical aid. The board took requests under advisement and pledged further discussion.

Board weighs fair hearing in Stach firing case

Minnesota State College Board will refer to its Rules and Appeals Committee whether Stach received a fair hearing before his firing from St Cloud State College. The case drew protests from supporters. hearings were disrupted and the decision upheld. The board also said retroactive faculty raises cannot be paid legally.
