Miners near three year contract amid pay board review

The Pay Board plans to hear soft coal miners and the Bituminous Coal Operators Association on a three year contract as wage rolls for construction workers face a freeze rollback risk. The Pay Board allowed most nonconstruction raises to proceed but linked construction wage delays to committee approval. The same day the Price Commission approved a 2.5 percent car price rise for 1972 models and IRS noted a surge in inquiries as phase two opened.

Pay Board rejects retroactive faculty pay again

Minnesota state college system chancellor G Theodore Mitau plans to seek Gov Wendell Anderson and Atty Gen Warren Spannaus aid after the Pay Board kept denying retroactive wage increases lost during Nixon’s 90 day freeze. Mitau called the vote disappointing and urged action to honor contracts and equal salary treatment statewide. University of Minnesota President Malcolm Moos had already said university faculty would receive the retroactive hikes.

Minnesota imposes four percent casual auto sales tax

Minnesota officials announce a new four percent sales tax on private auto sales effective January 1. Private transfers will pay tax when ownership changes, with exemptions for spousal and parental transfers. A $1 recycling fee adds to transfer costs, funding a state recycling program.

Regional group approves Bemidji grant application

The Headwaters Regional Development Commission approved a 2.366 million dollar Bemidji project to develop a well field and sewer water to the airport site for a Holiday Inn Complex. The board also approved a 1.134 million dollar Mahnomen grant for sewer and water projects.

Legislature May Seek One More Reapportionment Session

Senate Leader Holmquist proposes another special session to pursue reapportionment after Governor Anderson vetoed a prior bill. A federal panel declared current districts unconstitutional and will draw new maps for 1972 unless a legislative governor plan gains court approval by year end.
