Nixon sweeps nation but faces divided Congress

President Nixon won a historic landslide capturing 49 of 50 states and about 61 percent of the vote, with McGovern carrying only Massachusetts and Washington DC. Democrats gain seats in the Senate and a net one governor, while Republicans fail to win a House majority. Nixon vows to press ahead with major tasks.

Minnesota voters stage near rebellion

Minnesota voters re elected Senator Walter Mondale but Nixon led early counting, boosting to 51 percent and giving Minnesota's 10 electoral votes. Eight incumbents seemed re elected, with Zwach leading in the 6th District while Nolan contested. Rolvaag ousted Peterson for public service commissioner as legislature control remained in suspense.

Beltrami Board Renames Freude County Assessor

The Beltrami County Board of Commissioners unanimously re appointed Donald Freude as county assessor for a four year term starting January 1, 1973. The meeting also approved a subdivision ordinance to simplify land descriptions and discussed trails on tax forfeit land and a detoxification center plan funded by private non profits with state support. The board made no decision on the latter.

Indian pact review hoped. Indians hold BIA Building

White House aides agree to form a task force to review Indian needs while protests continue in Washington. Negotiators led by Hank Adams sign an accord to have Indians leave the BIA Building by 9 am, though American Indian Movement leader Vernon Bellecourt says vacating depends on government action.

Jansen Wins Bemidji Mayor Race In City Primaries

With Ward 1 count slow, Todd Jansen leads Bemidji mayoral race as final results show 2,659 for Jansen and 1,788 for Hailey. Cameron McMahon re elected councilman at large. Larry Dow wins Ward 1 with 655 votes. Ward 3 sees Davis over Smart 673 to 376. Ward 5 Berglund defeats Peterson 429 to 345. Turnout high at 71 percent.

Close Race Emerges In Beltrami County Second District

Beltrami County ballots tallied show a tight contest for county commissioner with Henry Rossiter at 1,112 and Lowell Biella at 1,111 in unofficial results. Fourth district races favor Carl Falk 948 to 580 and Doug St Onge leads Willys Nord for district 4A. State Senator Jerry Willet leads Allen Habedank 3,985 to 3,220 as precincts report. Bemidji Chamber maps busy season with promotions

The Retail Trade Committee met on November 7 to plan Thanksgiving and Christmas promotions. A Halloween window painting contest was praised and may return. A turkey giveaway for 40 to 50 birds will occur November 18 at the Bookcraft corner with Friday November 17 registration. Christmas decorations include a tree at Bookcraft corner and street lighting work by the Fire Department. Evening store hours start December 8 with merchants setting hours. Free Christmas events for children are noted.
