Washington AP reports a tight House vote on a proposed constitutional amendment to permit prayers in public schools. It requires two-thirds to pass and would still need Senate approval and ratification by 38 states. Rep. Chalmers P. Wylie led a petition to bring it to the floor despite opposition arguing it threatens religious freedom.
CHICAGO AP Some Minnesota inmates may soon contract with the state parole board to set release dates under a new plan discussed by Corrections Commissioner David Fogel at a University of Chicago conference. The system would apply to indeterminate sentences at Stillwater Prison and St. Cloud Reformatory with goals like trade qualifications guiding release. officials expect pilots to begin with newly convicted prisoners after year’s start.
A two car collision on Highway 71 north of Bemidji early Sunday injured two people and damaged both vehicles. William Glidden and Janana Parrish of Bemidji were treated and released at Bemidji Hospital. A separate crash near Solway left Bemidji resident Margaret Wayne with slight injuries after her car hit a stalled Volkswagen owned by Michael Kelly of Murray Utah.
