A Bemidji reader notes mail is not delivered until 3 or 3 30 PM and asks why delivery cannot begin around 4 00 AM to speed things up. The superintendent Russell Shofner states not all can be served early, though some mail will be delivered at the end of routes.

The Pentagon extended a $1,500 enlistment bonus for volunteers in combat branches to June 30. Eligible men must enlist for four years, up from the usual three. From June to September about 10,000 in the Army and 3,200 in the Marines joined under the program as efforts to field an all volunteer force continued.

A 300-member group of militant Indians ended an 18-hour seizure of the Bureau of Indian Affairs building in Washington DC after White House talks. They agreed to vacate the building today and move to a nearby Departmental Auditorium while officials review a 20-point petition. AIM leaders said they are sovereign and refused to meet with a key Interior official during negotiations.
The Minneapolis firm released a 14 page report detailing its June 1 to Oct 1 wheat deals with Russia, saying it faced 661000 costs and warnings of windfall profits. Three women died in a headon crash on an icy stretch of U.S. 6 north of Silver Bay Minnesota. Diane Chunick 22 of Thunder Bay Ont and Dorothy Ann Kashuha 24 also of Thunder Bay were passengers in one car while Robyn Lou Lehto 18 of Grand Marais Minn was a passenger in the other car. Fred E Wuole 21 of Duluth Minn driver of the second car was hospitalized in serious condition. The crash raises Minnesota 1972 highway toll to 832.

Washington AP reports the US total employment rose about 700000 to 82.7 million while the jobless rate stayed at 5.5 percent. Unemployment fell to 4.5 million but seasonally adjusted figures showed no change. Average earnings for about 50 million workers remained near 3.73 per hour or 139.13 per week though inflation rose. The White figures show women's rate at 5.8 percent and nonwhite unemployment easing to about 10.4 percent. Employment growth continues a climb begun in 1971, 2.7 million higher than a year earlier.
County engineer John Kemp and state and federal officials will inspect Forest Service roads in the Bemidji area. A decommissioned freighter adrift in Lake Superior was spotted by Coast Guard air and ground units. The ship appeared to be listing about 15 degrees and rode at anchor with no immediate danger. Coast Guard helicopter rescued five men from the Nettleton and took them to Houghton County Airport in good condition. Cutter Woodruff heads to the scene and is to reach Nettleton by 2 p.m. EST.
