A three member Bemidji City Council panel heard a grievance from the Bemidji Police Federation opposing outside candidates for the police chief exam. No action was taken. a further meeting with the Police Civil Service Commission is planned, likely next week, to continue discussions.

The Minnesota Medical Association ends its three day convention in Bloomington with a proposal from Dr. Thomas Maher urging a state law banning abortion after viability. Maher argues viability may occur at 20 weeks as infants born at that stage have survived.
Minnesota State College Board upheld regulations requiring first and second year students to live in residence halls unless living with parents or excused for valid reasons. Bemidji State College protesters sought off campus housing for Indian students. The board stated cases are individual and no race based exemptions exist. Appeals follow college housing authority, vice president for student affairs, then the president.
In Sault Ste. Marie Michigan a 3 hour blockade by about 100 Chippewa Indians stopped traffic on the only road into the Bay Mills Reservation to protest the arrest of Bruce Teeple and Wayne Teeple on fishing violations. Police pledged to stay off the reservation unless invited.
Over 1,000 graduates and undergraduates will receive diplomas at Bemidji State College’s 53rd annual commencement on June 3 at 1 30 p.m. in the BSC stadium. The program features a band concert, an invocation, addresses by student and college leaders, and diploma presentations chaired by Dr. Richard Beitzel with honorary ushers noted.
