H Menge of Northwestern Bell told Bemidji customers to hang up on silent or improper calls and to avoid sharing numbers. He warned such calls are punishable by law, and the company will cooperate with authorities to stop abuse and may cut service to violators.
About 325 Bemidji youths began a Lake Bemidji hike titled Hiking for Friendship. Participants paid per mile rates from .823 to over 1.50 dollars as 35 miles remained to complete the course. Hikers endured blisters and shed apparel during the trek after a send-off.
A tri partite group from the Forest Service Bemidji State College and Minneapolis city and school district weighs a long term lease to host hundreds of Twin Cities campers at the Bald Eagle Center. Officials note environmental education, shared facilities and compatibility with public interests. Jim Smith and Lowell Krause were honored as outstanding director and president respectively. The top Jaycee couple was Orv and Michelle Filbrandt. Mel Anarud earned the highest Jaycee senatorship.
Former attorney general John Mitchell and ex commerce secretary Maurice Stans pleaded innocent to perjury conspiracy and obstructing a federal investigation into financier Robert Vesco. The Supreme Court split denied a desegregation bid and a memo connected to Watergate was released. Gold prices surged as the dollar fell on speculation Nixon may quit.
Minnesota lawmakers finished the 1973 session and planned to reconvene January 1, 1974, the first regular session in an election year. The House ended its final day near 4 a.m. Sunday, the Senate at 6:45 a.m. under rules allowing a legislative day to run to 7 a.m.

Bemidji Police Officers Federation files grievance against the city claiming the Police Civil Service Commission violated ordinance No. 15 by seeking statewide applicants to replace retiring Chief James McDowell. Petition to be presented at the 8 p.m. city council meeting in City Hall.
