Widow searches for odd jobs as fraud probe swells

A 67 year old widow in Florida plans to hunt for odd jobs to rebuild savings erased by what state officials call possibly one of the biggest frauds in history. A task force of federal, state and local authorities meets in Tallahassee to coordinate strategy against the scheme that allegedly robbed thousands of investors of millions.

The 5.3 billion measure backing 900000 jobs moves to the Senate after a House vote of 293 to 107. A dispute over 700 million for railroad improvements remains unresolved as the House returns the item to the Senate. President Ford has threatened a veto.

Police intelligence network under scrutiny by officials

Washington report notes disclosure of a nationwide police intelligence unit alarms some city leaders. A Cook County prosecutor plans an investigation into the unit’s possible role in Chicago police surveillance of private citizens. Laos Students Threaten Executions Over Officials

In Vientiane pacifist demonstrators threaten to execute three American hostages unless corrupt provincial officials and right wing figures are removed. Diplomats say the threats are taken seriously though unlikely to be carried out. A high level Pathet Lao delegation traveled to Savannakhet to negotiate the hostages pending release from the anti American protest.

Marines Evacuated From Koh Tang After Mayaguez Rescue

U S helicopters rescued nearly 200 Marines stranded on Koh Tang island as heavy fire delayed the first attempts. Two Marines died and eight were wounded. 40 crew of the merchant ship Mayaguez were unharmed. The Coral Sea carried out the evacuation with Hancock and other ships nearby. The Mayaguez then steamed toward Singapore under its own power.

Waterfront upgrade ideas shown to Bemidji panel

At a Parks and Recreation meeting Don Campbell presented tentative designs for remodeling Bemidji waterfront. The plans map nine sections from the lakefront of Bemidji State College to the Mississippi River inlet, with detailed area plans to follow in two to three weeks for public comment. The committee is Cham ber of Commerce backed and seeks broad community representation.

Nymore resident donates land for park

Bemidji resident Mrs. Lillian Schmunk transferred deed to a one block parcel at the northwest corner of 1st Street South and Lake Avenue to the city. She hopes the land be named in memory of her husband Otto Schmunk. Neighbors plan to clear brush and set up a small neighborhood park this summer with possible future playground equipment.
