The February CPI shows a six tenth of a percent rise driven by higher services costs such as medical fees utilities and rent with food prices up only slightly. Real earnings fell further as hourly wages rose modestly and purchase power declined reflecting ongoing inflation and mounting labor costs.

Blind man seeks changes in tax laws debate

Ted Neville a 40 year old blind man who sold his Bemidji property and bought a Cass Lake home is pressing for a real estate tax exemption reform. He argues current law taxes the 1975 property without his blind exemption and that the benefit should stay with the person rather than the property during the transition. Neville has lobbied legislators and media as four tax bills are pending and he notes exemptions now apply to the former owner’s property. Real estate taxes for blind persons remain five percent for the first 24000 evaluation and 40 percent thereafter.
