Gladys Baker Swanson of Shevlin reflects on two years of blindness. She says life has been full despite loss and describes the impact of her condition.
Gladys Baker Swanson, 67, who was blind about two years after a 1973 accident, regained her sight last May after eye operations and faith in God. She recalls the darkness and now urges people to protect their eyesight while noting the kindness of neighbors and the richness of life she has pursued as an inventor and painter.
Luciano Porcari, a 36 year old Italian auto mechanic, seized a Winchester rifle on an Iberian Airlines Boeing 727 during a 449 hour hijacking spanning Europe and West Africa. Swiss police subdued him. 1 officer wounded, 13 passengers plus 7 crew unharmed. Hostages released in stages. Porcari held in Swiss custody as extradition looms.
Developers Diversified of Cleveland won a grading and utility permit for the Paul Bunyan Mall site on Highway 2 West. K-Mart along with Bostwicks and Pennys are set as department stores on the 24 acre project as construction aims to start mid April with a target completion by spring or summer of next year. officials expect a November K-Mart opening if schedules hold.
Bemidji school board approves the 1977 78 and 1978 79 calendars after a debate with BEA president Howard Schultz who urged calendar input and flexibility for future energy crises. The plan includes 180 teaching days, two teacher workshop days, August 29 start, June 2 end, and holidays.
The Beltrami County Welfare Board set adult care foster home rates at 290 per month per person for seven homes effective April 1. Six homes rise from 265, one lowers from 300. The board aims for equal rates to avoid issues and notes neighboring counties may raise theirs. A 1977 78 budget for the county day activity center was also tentatively approved.
