Northwest Airlines pilots went on strike just before 3 a.m. halting service at the nation’s seventh largest carrier. About 50,000 to 60,000 passengers were affected as negotiations remained stalled and no new talks were scheduled.
A Citizens Environmental Protection Association spokesman calls for more grass roots citizen participation. Phil Heilman, a board member, notes a good turnout at the morning meeting.
County taxpayers may protest property valuations at a Saturday 10 a.m. meeting of the Beltrami County Board of Equalization at the courthouse. If unresolved, protests may go to the State Board of Equalization. The five commissioners, County Auditor Wayne Alsop, and County Assessor Donald Freude will attend. Todd Jensen of the Beltrami County Taxpayers Association urges strong turnout to oppose increased evaluations. The CEPA group met to discuss Bemidji’s proposed sewage disposal plant and urged hiring two additional engineers for an independent survey.
Most area businesses will close Tuesday July 4 for Independence Day. All government offices will close Tuesday. the post office will be closed and mail delivery suspended except for special deliveries within the city. Lobby open for box patrons. no Pioneer issued Tuesday. Kit chigami Regional Library closed Tuesday. Monday business hours resume with normal garbage pickup.
