Bodies recovered in Leech Lake plane crash

Four men died when their Piper Cherokee 235 crashed into Leech Lake near Uram Bay. Divers recovered the bodies after a day long search by Cass County units. The pilot Jim Thormodson owned the plane. passengers included Rev. James Hayden Kevin Cashman and Douglas Pizel. An FAA investigation was planned.

Suspect in Girl Scout murders eludes search

A 250 man posse plus state police, Tulsa officers and 150 volunteers hunted near Skunk Mountain three miles from Camp Scott for Gene Leroy Hart, the convicted rapist suspected after the June 13 killings of three Girl Scouts. Dogs, bloodhounds and a Tulsa television helicopter aided the search as authorities weighed Hart’s possible Locust Grove ties and 1973 jail escape.

Fishing for Fun Supports BSU Scholarship Fund

Fishermen take part in Bemidji State University Foundation sponsored Fishing for Fun contest for the BSU scholarship. The event, held with the Bemidji Area Chamber of Commerce and KDAL, offers over 2500 in prizes and a fish fry dinner. Tickets are 7.50, with 4.50 for dinner and 3 for the scholarship. registration at the Chamber includes a fishing kit and free tackle.

Surprising findings at Bemidji EIS meeting reveal population, flow drops

Environmental consultant Clark Boli told Bemidji residents that population has fallen from 1970 to 1975 and wastewater flow has declined since 1973. He noted 1975 wet and 1976 dry years did not explain the decrease and said the EIS must re-evaluate plant alternatives as 2000 projections shrink. The EPA hired Wapora Inc to prepare the EIS and guide the final treatment plant decision amid the ongoing controversy.

Eight Chileans began a hunger strike at the Geneva headquarters of the International Red Cross while 26 Chileans ended a 10 day fast at a United Nations office in Santiago and five American sympathizers ended a six day sit in at a U N office in Washington. The demonstrators seek a United Nations inquiry into the fate of 2 500 people who disappeared after the 1973 military coup in Chile.
