Attorney seeks psychiatric exam for Littlewolf in murder case

In Cass Lake, Theodore Dale Littlewolf 22 requests a list of psychiatrists to determine competency to stand trial for the April 17 death of Dorothy Morrow. The omnibus hearing was continued to July 13 for state crime lab reports. Morrow's body was found near Bemidji. The state accuses Littlewolf of murder by axe strike and also charges criminal sexual conduct robbery theft and vehicle theft from April incidents. Judge James E. Preece to rule on the psychiatric examination motion.

Grand Rapids drug raid ends with gunfire and arrests

Itasca County deputies and Grand Rapids police arrested three men after a month long probe into a rural marijuana sale. One suspect sustained a gunshot and scalp wound during the raid and is listed in satisfactory condition. authorities seized three handguns two rifles and two shotguns.

Jury Finds Gary Newell Guilty in Theft Case

After nearly six hours of deliberation jurors convict Gary Newell 28 Bemidji of feloniously receiving stolen property tied to an undercover Bemidji Police investigation. Sentencing set for July 19 with pre sentence investigation ordered and Newell released on $2000 bond.

Perpich names new DNR head

Governor Perpich selected William B. Nye age 43 to lead Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources. Nye, an Ohio lawyer and former state legislator, headed Ohio DNR 1971 to 1975 and has since been executive vice president of the Ohio Home Builders Association. Open meeting case questions Cass Lake school board action

In Bemidji a preliminary show cause hearing addressed whether Cass Lake School Board violated open meeting law by a March 30 special meeting. The board voted four to three to not renew Jerome Winger’s contract after a prior March 29 vote of confidence. The suit, filed in Walker by Cass Lake- Bena Local Indian Education Committee and Jerome Vinger, could escalate to the state Supreme Court.
