Capture of James Earl Ray Ends Tennessee Prison Break

James Earl Ray, pursued for 54 hours by bloodhounds Sandy and Little Red, was found exhausted in leaves five miles from Brushy Mountain State Prison after a 3 mile wooded chase. He surrendered without resistance and was hospitalized. two other escapees remained at large. Authorities praised the capture as the end of one of Tennessee’s largest manhunts.

Unrest erupts as two shot in Johannesburg department store

Two black youths fired on four whites in a central Johannesburg department store warehouse killing two and wounding another. Eyewitnesses described a hand grenade thrown by one attacker. Bemidji to Get 100000 Grant for Water Project

Governor Perpich announced five grants from the Upper Great Lakes Regional Development Commission at a Green Bay meeting. Bemidji will receive 100000 for the Highway 2 west water project, with total project cost over 1 million and city share about 300000.

EPA names panel to study Bemidji sewage crisis EIS

The EPA announced a 22 member citizens committee to assist in preparing an environmental impact statement for the Bemidji waste treatment controversy. The panel, formed May 26 in Bemidji with about 80 residents in attendance, will review reports, rank local environmental factors, and evaluate wastewater treatment options. The first meeting is June 23 at Beltrami County Courthouse with a second public meeting tentatively set for July.

Hostage recounts release details of Holland train siege

One of two hostages who died when Dutch commandos stormed a besieged train in Assen was killed by a South Moluccan terrorist, according to a surviving captive. A Justice Ministry spokeswoman said the other hostage likely died from a terrorist’s gunshot before the attacker was shot in turn.
