James Earl Ray, pursued for 54 hours by bloodhounds Sandy and Little Red, was found exhausted in leaves five miles from Brushy Mountain State Prison after a 3 mile wooded chase. He surrendered without resistance and was hospitalized. two other escapees remained at large. Authorities praised the capture as the end of one of Tennessee’s largest manhunts.
Two black youths fired on four whites in a central Johannesburg department store warehouse killing two and wounding another. Eyewitnesses described a hand grenade thrown by one attacker. Police seized two youths though arrests remain unconfirmed as security forces gird for Soweto unrest amid an upcoming anniversary of last year's riots.

The EPA announced a 22 member citizens committee to assist in preparing an environmental impact statement for the Bemidji waste treatment controversy. The panel, formed May 26 in Bemidji with about 80 residents in attendance, will review reports, rank local environmental factors, and evaluate wastewater treatment options. The first meeting is June 23 at Beltrami County Courthouse with a second public meeting tentatively set for July.
