A 5 year old girl was pulled to safety from a Queens housing project apartment where her father was found dead from a gunshot. Police surrounded the scene as Floyd Steele, 56, surrendered after holding the girl at gunpoint for days. The mother escaped, and a medical examiner headed to the scene.

A Silver Bay 4 year old, Jerald Severson, was killed after being struck by a motorcycle near his home. David Allen Alvar 22 of Duluth died in a separate car truck collision on U.S. 69 near Pattonsburg Missouri. his wife and daughter were treated for minor injuries.

Beltrami County approves 3 000 for Fair Board and raises probation pay
Beltrami County Board of Commissioners held its first meeting in the new annex on June 11. They approved a 3 000 appropriation to the Fair Board for July 1 1974 to June 30 1975 and granted a six percent pay increase to the two probation officers effective July 1 1974. The Heartland tourism promotion received 1 318. A circus at the Fairgrounds was denied to protect agricultural use. The board also moved 10 000 from the Revenue Fund to the Nursing Home Fund and adjusted nursing home grading for drainage. A Green Thumb supervisor was hired to lead a youth crew at Three Island Lake County Park with 25 cents per hour for 20 hours plus 2 25 per hour for 10 hours. Overtime policy was set to comply with 1974 FLSA amendments.
