Northern Township sewer survey planned by HRDC

Headwaters Regional Development Commission plans a July 1 mailed questionnaire to about 600 Northern Township homes and businesses to gauge interest in a local sewer collection system feeding into Bemidji’s interceptor and treatment plant. Audubon Meeting Hears DNR Delay on Copper Nickel Mining

Robert Herbst head of the Minnesota DNR told Bemidji Audubon members that copper and nickel mining in northern Minnesota will wait for a three year environmental study funded by a 3 million dollar state and federal grant. The study will assess long range effects on the iron range BWCA and northwestern Minnesota. Herbst cited potential deposits exceeding 100 billion dollars and outlined land purchases and a proposed six year 100 million dollar land acquisition push. He noted state ownership of 8.5 million acres plus 5.2 million acres held in trust and 2.9 million under county jurisdiction, with ongoing acquisition plans following a 19.7 million appropriation and a 300000 acre target. He favored the Colvin site for taconite disposal and discussed a land classification system and in lieu of taxes concept.
