President Nixon asked Congress to abolish the Office of Emergency Preparedness the Office of Science and Technology and the National Aeronautics and Space Council. The move would save about 2 million and 389 jobs. Functions would transfer to line agencies and departments. The Space Council would go out of existence. The plan also hints the Office of Consumer Affairs might survive.
Bemidji Civil Air Patrol officers announce they will cut about 500 to 600 ice holes near the lakefront for the Winter Fishing Derby this Sunday. Maynard Swede Carlson a Minnesota bush pilot died from injuries suffered in a light aircraft crash on Lake of the Woods. He died Wednesday at Brooke Army Medical Center where he had been treated for second and third degree burns covering 46 percent of his body. Carlson aged 53 operated a flying service at Warroad Minnesota and was injured January 17 in the Lake of the Woods crash.

Temperatures range from the mid 30s northwest to the low 40s southeast today, lows 10 to 18, and Saturday highs 18 to 25 with precipitation chances of 10, 30, and 50 percent respectively.
